The HPC received a report from commissioner Jon Stephens who attended the Real Places 2023 conference. He learned that May is designated as Historic Preservation Month and the commission discussed ways they could utilize that month to promote historic preservation within the City. They will be requesting a Proclamation to be read in the first meeting in May this year to bring more awareness to the public. They will also be spending more time as a commission coming up with plans and ideas on how to create events around historic preservation that can be done each May, beginning in 2024. Some ideas discussed were tours of historic sites and cemeteries, and working with businesses in the historic district to host events designed to bring people downtown and learn about the history of downtown and the businesses there.
They also approved a certificate of appropriateness for the future chiropractor (located at the former Bless This Nest site) for adding parking in the back of the building with a requirement that the owner must improve (pave) the alleyway that provides access to the parking.
