When CM Earp first broached the idea of an employee and volunteer recognition event, I said it sounded like a good idea, but I did not want any council recognition to be part of the event. To me, the event is to thank the city employees and the board and commission volunteers for all they do for the city. My role as a council member is to show my appreciation to them at the event. I'm not going there to be recognized myself, or to recognize any of you.
Since then, I have heard the event described a few times as recognizing city staff, board and commission volunteers, and council. I want to see council recognition removed from the event. Staff and volunteers are the ones deserving the recognition, not us. If any of us feel a need for recognition, we can hold a campaign event and let our supporters recognize us using campaign funds, not an event spending city tax dollars.
If we get quick agreement on that here, maybe it can just be removed and we move on. Otherwise, Mayor Snyder I guess this would be a request for the following agenda item on the 12/15/22 meeting:
Discussion and possible action on directing the city manager to remove all city council recognition from the December 16th, 2022 city holiday event.

My thought is that this is for the staff and volunteers and I agree with your thinking.

Agree with Dan and Randal. The event was supposed to be a recognition for volunteers on our boards and commissions. I was a little hesitant on the $15,000 price tag, only because if we recognize 7 boards of 7 people each, add in 7 cc members and some staff, we may have like 70 people and that is $214 per person.
I suggested to the City Manager that if we needed help securing a place to save some $$, I'd be more than willing to help.
In recognizing people, I don't think that it's the $$ that counts. I'm hoping that this stays as originally proposed, a way to recognize our volunteers. Spending a bunch of money could overshadow the intent, and instead look like money misspent when we have sidewalks and other items that the money could have gone too.
